Teacher of English – Full-Time
This is an exciting opportunity to join our academic team in Kuwait at a time of ambitious growth for the British Council across adult, young learner (YL), and corporate English programs in the Gulf region and specifically Kuwait. British Council Kuwait offers English language tuition to adults and young learners and is the largest YL teaching center in the Gulf, providing you with great opportunities to develop your YL teaching to all our age groups.
Role Purpose
- To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English
- To provide learners with a rewarding and stimulating English language learning experience
- To support the wider aims of the British Council and its cultural relations mission
Accountabilities
- Planning, preparing, and delivering high-quality English language teaching that meets the needs of different customer groups taking into account individual learning styles.
- Monitoring progress and providing regular feedback to help manage students’ performance throughout the course, and actively promote learner autonomy.
- Contributing to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English language courses, materials, and related services.
- Ensuring teaching meets the standards expected in Teaching and Learning Reviews, the annual Academic Quality Plans, and organizational expectations.
Working with Children
- Ability to work in a way that promotes the safety and well-being of children
- Effective communication and engagement with children and their families
- Knowledge and understanding of child development and its impact on learning and behaviour
- Knowledge and understanding of positive disciplinary methods
Qualifications
Essentials
- Cambridge CELTA or Trinity Certificate TESOL
- Bachelor’s degree (in any discipline)
Desirables
- Cambridge DELTA or Trinity Diploma and or equivalent
- Postgraduate Certificate in Education or Bachelor of Education (PGCE) or Bachelor of Education (B.Ed). in primary or secondary.
- Teaching Young Learners Extension Certificate (TYLEC) or Certificate in English Language Teaching to Young Learners (CELTYL)
- MA (TESOL or another related subject)
Salary & Benefits
- Salary: 840 – 950 KWD/Month (Depending on qualification and experience)
- Contract Duration: 2 Years
- Annual Leaves: 35 days annual leave, additionally 14 public holidays per year
- Medical Allowance: Medical Insurance is currently with MetLife ALICO. All healthcare insurance claims are the responsibility of the staff member and should be filed directly with their insurance coverage provider.
- Housing Contribution: 150 KWD per month
- Mobility allowances and support (if recruited from outside Kuwait)

- Temporary Accommodation: Up to two weeks upon arrival
- Fares and travel: Employees will be eligible for an economy-class flight to the host location from their point of origin, in line with the British Council travel policy
Additional Information
- Contract hours: 37.5 hours per week
- Teaching Hours: 25 per week
- Tentative Start date: 20 September 2024 (Depending on teaching requirements and PAS & Visa process)
- Work Schedule: The teaching center is currently open 6 days a week Friday to Wednesday. Normal working patterns are Friday to Tuesday or Saturday to Wednesday.
- Right to work in the country – Candidates are expected to have researched whether they have the right to live and work in the country in which the role is based. Given that our offices have different legal status depending on the work we do in those countries.
- In line with Kuwaits’ labor regulations, the primary sponsor for his spouse and children is the father. To qualify as a sponsor for his child and wife, the father’s salary cap should be minimum 800 KWD, he needs to have a university graduation certificate and his job should align with the qualifications.
- Women are not allowed to sponsor their husbands.
- Single Mothers can sponsor their children on dependent / family visas provided their salary cap is KWD 800 per month mentioned on the work permit only if the husband is deceased or divorced. She needs to have a university graduation certificate and her job should align with the qualifications.
- Applicants over the age of 60 years will NOT be considered due to visa restrictions in Kuwait.
- Currently, these are the nationalities we know of that are restricted entry into Kuwait- Afghanistan, Sudan, Pakistan, Iraq, Somalia, Libya, Iran, Syria, and Yemen.
Essentials
- Equivalent to around 2 years post-certificate i.e. CELTA or Trinity certificate TESOL experience gained from teaching a variety of age groups and levels from young learners through to adults.
- You should have experience in teaching two or more of the following age groups:
- Young learners aged 4 to 7 (600+ hours)
- Young learners aged 8 to 12 (600+ hours)
- Young learners aged 13 to 17 (600+hours)
- Adults aged 18+ (600+ hours)
Desirables
- Experience teaching MyClass, IELTS, Early Years, Primary + and Secondary +
- Previous work history with the British Council
- Experience teaching in a classroom environment similar to the British Council
